Why take care of obesity?

Obesity is the most frequent metabolic disorder in Belgium and Western countries. No less than 20 per cent of the population suffers from this pathology that accounts for an increase in the risk of the following types of diseases:

  • metabolic (diabetes,  hypercholesterolaemia),
  • cardiovascular (hypertension, myocardial infarct, arthritis, phlebitis)
  • respiratory (asthma, sleep apnoea)
  • rheumatological (arthrosis, herniated disc)
  • neoplastic (breast cancer, oesophageal cancer)
  • psychological (depression)
  • endocrine (infertility, menstrual disorders in women, impotence in men)
  • gastroenterological (gall bladder lithiasis, fatty liver)
  • psychosocial (feeling of being unhappy, frustration, more difficult social integration)

Obesity also causes the patient’s marginalisation at work and modifies relationships within the family circle.
It is urgent for you to seek treatment because your life is at stake!

Effective obesity treatment must lead to significant weight loss but, most of all, must enable the individual to keep the excess weight off in the long run.
