The balloon : the solution to lose weight without effort or surgery?

Intragastric balloon to "swallow" and inflated with nitrogen

Previous water-filled balloon

Until recently we had an intragastric balloon filled with water to 700 cc. Treatment was done by gastroscopy and required general narcosis to both the establishment and withdrawal.
The weight of the balloon caused two major drawbacks:

  1. obstruction of the stomach with a lot of nausea and vomiting to the point that some patients asked the withdrawal of the balloon after a few days
  2. dilatation of the stomach: the presence of a mass of 700 g in the stomach had the tendency to expand this body. When removing the balloon at the end of treatment, increased volume stomach gave a feeling of hunger and the risk was important for a resumption of weight very fast.

As such, this type of treatment is increasingly abandoned.

New generation of balloons with nitrogen

At present, our team use the latest generation of intragastric balloon. The concept is revolutionary! Why?

  • The ball looks like a "pill" that is swallowed with a little water. This pill is connected to a thin catheter. This act does not require narcosis or gastroscopy.
  • The balloon is inflated with nitrogen to a volume of 250 cc. This is done by inflating the catheter end. Once the volume is well achieved, the catheter is removed simply by mouth and the ball is loose in the stomach.
  • The ball weighs 6 g! As such, it does not clog the outlet of the stomach and does not cause nausea or vomiting. It remains at the top of the stomach where it will stimulate receptors of satiety and allow reduced food intake.
  • The ball does not expand the stomach. Thus, after removal, weight control is much easier.
  • The ball may remain in place until the desired weight loss and will be removed by simply gastroscopy without narcosis
  • For patients with more excess weight or with a larger stomach, it is possible if necessary to place a second balloon after 3 to 4 weeks in order to optimize the feeling of satiety.

This treatment is done in practice because it requires a medical and radiological control. Indeed, prior to treatment, we perform a radiological assessment of the stomach to exclude any abnormality and especially the presence of a hiatal hernia. Radios will also be made for the placement of the ball to ensure proper positioning in the stomach.

The placement procedure takes about 30 minutes and patients can immediately return to their homes even while driving the vehicle if desired.

Weight loss is improved if the dietary recommendations are followed and regular physical activity is practiced.
After 6 months, there is a medium weight reduction of 10 to 20 kg, decreases in BMI of more than 5.
